The Disadvantages of Having a Best Friend

By Bing Aranzanso

Friends are gifts. As the adage says, "True friends are like diamonds real and rare, false friends are like leaves scattered everywhere."

What more if you have a best friend that seems a part of you? It is more than a gift to have true friends indeed. But as I had pointed out in Is it okay not to have a best friend?, having a best friend also have its disadvantages.

*You are sometimes limited in going out with other potential friends, especially if a best friend is the jealous type.

*You become so confined with the tag 'best friend' that you
tend to ignore the quality of the friendship.

*You will not have a chance to experience other friends
that have the same interests as yours because you and
your 'best friend' have to be together 'always'.

*You sometimes feel you belong to a person which should not
be the case.

My daughter must be right. It is not wise to be staying with only one best friend and limit yourself by not trying to be friends with other interesting people. We can be best friends with many without the tag.

If you have more than one of anything, one of them must be the best.

The secret is to know which is the best in any given set of circumstances.

i have known some of the best, oldcoot, in some of those trying times in my life.

As I became older, I started to think in terms of "closest" friend rather than "best" friend. It sounds less divisive, somehow. But I agree with oldcoot on this one. The trick is knowing which friend is "best" at a certain time.

When I was young I used to like a roommate with whom I could do things but who didn’t feel they always has to tag along whenever I wanted to do things with other people.

One extensive study in the United States found that most teenagers spend about 10 percent of their time in face-to-face contact with friends but up to 20 percent of their waking hours alone .. more time than they spend with either family or friends. They eat alone, travel alone, entertain themselves alone. Encouraging this trend toward isolation is the proliferation of electronic devices.
