Alternative Toilet Cleaners
By Bing Aranzanso
The 'white house' needs to be maintained on a regular basis all the time. That's the rule. Or else it will stink and illnesses will spread. Or else regular 'deposit' will be greatly affected. It will not be a pleasant experience to spend the mornings releasing the unwanted. We call our toilet the 'white house'. Though ours is not typically white all over, we call it the 'white house' as code which is used when suddenly any of us feels the need and we are around people and needs to be excused. The code also implies that it is the area of the house that requires regular cleaning. And because this is about alternative toilet cleaners, I will be sharing those that I use lest you get bored and confused. I use them when the supply runs out of the common toilet cleaners. I use bleach. Yes, bleach, the chemical that is used to make white clothes whiter, or 'cleaner'. The use of bleach is allowed as cleaners for hard surfaces like the toilet. Usually, what is indicated in the instructions is 3 tbsp on a liter of water. But I don't bother myself getting a spoon so I use the bottle cap instead and put two capfuls of bleach on a dipper full of water. We call the dipper 'tabo' in the Philippines, by the way. I spread the mixture on the walls and on the floor. I do not let it stay anymore for a specific time because I have limited time and I cannot be wasting time waiting. I am a busy mom. Or to be more specific, I am a working mom. If the cleanser is available, I use it with the mixture mentioned above so that I can scour readily and easily. It is a very effective way of getting rid of dirt and grime. I actually see these dirt and grime peeling off and flowing with the water while I rinse. If there is no cleanser, I use detergent instead. It is the same mixture I use for the toilet bowl. I use a specially designed brush with a long handle. I pour the mixture on the brush and not dip it in the dipper with the mixture. That is a gross practice if you do it! Unless you have a dipper or a pail specially intended for cleaning the toilet then you can dip it in. Recently, I discovered ethanol mixed with cleanser or detergent. Ethanol has a lingering smell but it is effective, too, in cleaning the toilet. It has to be remembered that one has to always consider using a pair of gloves when cleaning the toilet. The bleach, the cleanser, the ethanol or the detergent powder are strong and they can destroy the skin. I should know, I was a victim of my own ignorance (or stupidity?) once. So there. Simple tips that anybody can make use of when the toilet cleaners ran out. |

Great advice from a super-hygienic member of Qondio. Next time I run out of muriatic, I'll give the Zonrox a go. It will probably work better than dishwashing liquid.
